Tom Noonan, 95, Moorhead, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Ecumen Evergreens of Moorhead with his two daughters by his side.
Thomas P. Noonan (Bud) was born February 20, 1927, in Mobridge, SD. His family moved to Lisbon, ND in 1931, where he grew up and graduated high school. After high school, at the young age of 17, he enlisted in the NAVY. He served most of his time in the South Pacific (Philippines) on the USS Medusa as a Seaman First Class. After the Navy, he returned to ND, where he attended the State School of Science, Wahpeton, and Interstate Business College, Fargo.
Tom met the love of his life, Doris Hendrickson, of Fargo, ND, and was married in June, 1949. Together they had three children, Paula, Tommy, and Mary. Tom and Doris celebrated 51 years of marriage. Doris passed away in August of 2000. A few years later, Tom reconnected with an old sweetheart, Aileen Meyers. They were together for 20 years until Tom went into Assisted Living Care, in Evergreens in Moorhead, MN, in August 2020.
Tom worked as a bookkeeper for Jenson Heating, Mhd., Holsum Bakery (17 yrs.), Fargo, and State Crime Bureau for ND Attorney General as liquor license inspector. He and his wife Doris, owned and operated American Rose Floral in West Fargo. Tom introduced Tombstone Pizza into the Fargo/Moorhead area. He also was a salesman for Snyder Windows and Doors, Fargo. He worked in the scale house (20 yrs.) for American Crystal Sugar during the sugar beet harvest. He found joy in working as a Bailiff with the Cass County District Court as a part-time job. He always said, "The hardest part of this job is staying awake in the afternoon" because he was missing his naptime. He was 89 years old when he retired as Bailiff in 2016.
Tom was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 2 in Fargo. He also enjoyed being a member of the "Gauchos" Drum & Bugle Corps, where he marched and played the trumpet. For several summers, Tom and his wife Doris, ran the concession stand at Jack Williams-American Legion Post 2. They were cooking and working diligently during many Post 2 & Bombers baseball games, and tournaments. His grandchildren have fond memories of enjoying snow cones, hot dogs and the best burgers in town! Many people asked for his special recipe. "One we will never know."
Tom was also a life member of the VFW. Tom blew "Taps" at Military Funerals from 1942 to 2000. He was very honored to take part in one of the Fargo Honor Flights to Washington, DC. Tom enjoyed being with his family, playing Bingo (especially yelling "BINGO"), sharing stories with his veteran friends, telling jokes, dancing, and listening to big band music.
Tom is survived by his two daughters, Paula Klein (David), Manteca, CA, and Mary McManus (Jim Schott, fiancé), West Fargo, ND; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by his family and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and son, Thomas Noonan II, and other family and friends. All were waiting for him as he entered the gates of Heaven!
