Kent R. Zimmerman, 89, of Fargo, ND (formerly of Ulen, Minnesota) passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, while surrounded by his loving family. Kent was born to Clayton and Lillian (Wittmer) Zimmerman September 3, 1922, in Fargo, and grew up and graduated in Oriska, North Dakota. He attended college at Valley City State Teacher’s College for two years and then served in the United States Army during World War II. He completed his education by earning a degree in education from Valley City. He later earned his Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He was married to Colleen Olson on February 28, 1948. They were joined in marriage for 51 years, until her passing in 1999. Kent began teaching Social Studies at Ulen School in 1948 and served the school district for 37 years, 32 of them as superintendent. He impacted the lives of many students, teachers and community members. Kent valued education and always said what a privilege it was to be able to work with young people. Kent was a caring and sensitive man and particularly loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved his lake cabin at Tamarac and hunting and fishing with his son, Ron. Kent was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Colleen; and his brother, Ardell; and sister, Doreen. He will be remembered and deeply missed by his children, Sheryl (Gary) Dietzler, Angle Inlet, MN; Connie (Gary) Bakke, Fargo, ND; and Ron (Pam) Zimmerman, Dilworth, MN; as well as his grandchildren, Amy (Wayne) Herrick; Tara (Joe) Kelly, all of Fargo; and Brandon (Sara) Bakke, Moorhead, MN; Zac Zimmerman, Fargo; and Alison Zimmerman, Dilworth, MN; and great-grandchildren, Brody and Trey. Funeral Service: Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at 10:30 AM, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen, MN. Visitation: Monday, October 31, 2011, from 5-7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial: Bethlehem New North Cemetery, Ulen, MN.
